Microsoft Office Account for Home and Business

Microsoft recently made some changes in Office 365. End users have the option of choosing between two kinds of accounts: Home or Business accounts.

In real terms the home can only be associated with one person. If you choose to start a business account you’ll need all your employees. If you don’t intend to share your files with anyone else at work, then the home account is more suitable. A home-based account is ideal for those who have several PCs at work. You can use the same address for each of them. If you’re only running two or one computer in your workplace, then a corporate account will be more advantageous. It lets you connect files with other users and make it easier to manage them.

Maximum 5 email addresses per account These addresses are used to send primary mail. The first address is your primary address. The second address is an alternate address. This feature isn’t available for home accounts, but it is available for business accounts. You can set up the account as a home one and your first email will be the primary email you use. However, subsequent emails will use the same username as the sender. This could cause confusion since they might look like they were sent from your account even though they were sent by someone else within the company.

Limit on file size Limit on file size Home account is 20GB. If you need to send large files send an email, a business account is more suitable. Each user is able to access 1TB of storage space via the 365 webmail (Hotmail/Outlook) and is practically unlimited in file size.

Home accounts are intended to be used for email sharing between you and your family members. It is not possible to share documents however there are no other limitations. The Business account however has no limitations whatsoever on whether you can share documents or not, however it doesn’t allow users to share their emails with other people (so all users has their own email address).

More information: Microsoft Live/Outlook/Hotmail accounts can be joined by up to five individuals. That means to create a new address it is necessary to have at least two accounts. Business accounts do not have this restriction and can be joined to as many accounts as you want.
