With the U.S. facing devastating economic and environmental crises, with our state and cities forced into layoffs and cutbacks, now is the moment to demand a shift in our country’s priorities. Military spending – estimated by some at $1 trillion per year — is bankrupting our country and draining the life blood of our communities
Concerned organizations and individuals around the state have created the Maryland Campaign to Fund Our Communities, Bring the War Dollars Home. Our state and counties’ fiscal crises are in large part due to current military spending on foreign military bases, endless wars abroad, and war profiteering by huge international firms.
We support a major reduction in military spending, with the savings put toward meeting urgent needs, including the funding of jobs in housing, health care, education, clean energy and infrastructure repairs — and preventing the layoff of State and local public workers in Maryland. Just ending the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, cutting unneeded weapons programs, and eliminating wasteful spending would easily cut 25% of military spending, without compromising our security in any way.
The purpose of this campaign is to mobilize public bodies, elected officials, civil society and social movement organizations to demand that Congress:
- Reorder national priorities to meet human needs by cutting the military budget
- Put the country back to work
- Fully fund and restore essential social programs and public services
- Address the fiscal crisis of state and local governments
- Stop funding the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and refrain from new wars in any other country
Please help us ensure that the members of Maryland’s Congressional delegation become leaders in the Congress to demand a major reduction in military spending.
It’s time to Fund Our Communities, Bring the War Dollars Home!
