On October 11 2011, Fund Our Communities, Bring the War Dollars Home organized a rally to save the democratic process in Montgomery County. A majority of county councilmembers had co-sponsored a resolution urging Congress to spend more on state and local needs and to pay for that by spending less on wars and the military industrial complex. With that many co-sponsors — a majority of the council — the resolution should have passed no problem.
Bob Stewart says that “one call from a defense contractor” weakened the resolve of certain councilmembers. He urged the coalition at the rally to keep pushing for the resolution and to take the lead from people, young and old, who are currently pushing for more fairness and broader social change.
For the backstory, see this press release about the rally to get the council to vote on the resolution.
